“I am getting married!”

You burst out with delight as you share the good news with your god uncle and his wife. They respond with an expression you interpret as ‘pleasantly surprised’ and they both hug you. They ask about your potential partner and you are all too eager to extol the virtues of this angel who is unlike any other person you’ve met. You tell them how lucky you are to find one so rare, and tender and understanding and loving. You can’t contain your excitement. Conversation moves on to wedding plans and all that, until you are ready to go.

In a brief pause between opening the front door and saying goodbye, they turn to you, looking directly into your eyes and ask,

“Are you sure you want to do this?”

“Yes of course,” You respond.

And then the smile returns to their faces. Many years later, you may or may not remember this smile. If you do, then time must have filled you in on why they asked you that seemingly straightforward question.
