Coming from a society where guns are restricted to highly qualified legal owners, I struggle with understanding the American argument of private gun ownership. Same way, I guess, gun-owning Americans would struggle with understanding why one shouldn't be 'free' to own a gun.

Cultural differences aside, all Americans should trust America to protect them. Bullets shouldn't be sold with guns to the public. If you need a gun for show, buy one and put it on the mantlepiece. Bullets should only be legal for gun ranges and professionals. If you feel the urge to exercise your manliness (or womanliness in either case) go to a gun range and shoot for as long as you need to.
