On the 1st of November 2021, a 21-storey building collapsed in Ikoyi, Lagos Nigeria. Buried under the rubble were scores of people who just minutes before the collapse had been working to earn their daily wages. In the tense moments following the collapse, rumors rode on the wing of the winds. Some said that the developer was inside the building when it collapsed; others said he wasn’t. We heard that a driver who was waiting to pick up a passenger was crying uncontrollably because the supposed passenger was inside the rubble. A letter dated February 20, 2020, purportedly from a structural engineering company that withdrew their services from the project because they no longer shared the same vision with the developer leaped from screen to screen along with the shaky videos of the still-active collapse site. According to the letter, the developer had been cutting corners and the engineers didn’t want to be a party to that.

In all the commotion that followed, a few people survived.

One person who jumped off the falling building and landed in the next compound survived. Another person who’d stepped out to buy more plaster sand survived too. Another person who’d hurried out of the building with his brother before it came crashing down survived. Others were rescued from the rubble, as excavators clawed away at concrete and steel, and water hoses…
