Part 1: Effort
You’ve probably heard it before that everyone can solve the 3 by 3 Rubik’s cube by learning the algorithms. It will take a few minutes, or hours at first — not more time than we spend on TikTok, or playing Candy Crush Saga anyway.
But most people won’t solve it in their lifetimes.
Although there are millions of solution videos out there, most cubes will end up as toys on people’s shelves, that is if they ever make it past that first layer or two.
Why?
Why is solving a Rubik’s cube something a lot of people ‘want’ to do, but don’t end up doing despite all the tutorials out there? And what has this got to do with Faith?
The first time I tried solving a Rubik’s cube was after watching The Pursuit of Happyness in 2006. The film, featuring Will Smith as lead actor, was inspired by the true story of Chris Gardener — a homeless American man turned stockbroker. Chris (Will Smith) was able to get a foot in the door of a much needed job interview after sharing a taxi with his hiring manager, who’d been impressed at how smart he was because he could solve a Rubik’s cube in the time it took them to get to their destination.
