Of Wolves & House Dogs
One fine morning, a young wolf walked up to a picket fence in a nice neighborhood by the woods and chanced upon a house dog sitting in the shade of a nice porch. The house dog lay on its back on the hardwood floor, swatting at phantom flies bathing with dust in the ray of the morning sun. In a silver bowl by the house dog’s head lay a half-eaten, neglected bowl of Chewy Chow.
“Hey!” The wolf called to the house dog across the fence.
“Hey, too.” The house dog called back and walked across the expanse of the backyard to the other side of the picket fence.”
“That’s a nice home you have.”
“Oh. Thank you,” the house dog answered.
“My human takes good care of me. She feeds me twice a day, bathes me twice a month, and takes me to the vet twice a year.”
“Wow, what a lovely life.” the wolf thought to itself.
“It doesn’t have to hunt for food or sleep in a hole at night or forage for medicinal plants to keep it from getting sick.”
“Teach me to be a house dog.” the wolf asked. “I want to be like you.”
“It doesn’t take much to be a house dog,” the house dog replied.
