“Resistance” is why you are not doing

Resistance is that thing that happens when you sit at your desk with a clear task ahead. You know what to do and you know the intended outcome. You flex your arms and roll both shoulders simultaneously. Stretch out fully and crack your fingers. It is a daunting task you are about to undertake so it requires not just mental, but physiological readiness. You stand up and walk a few paces, bouncing the ideas around in your head and brainstorming. Then you go to the fridge — that ubiquitous appliance of inspiration and grab a soda, slice of pizza or whatever it is that this treasure trove has to offer. The task ahead is daunting and going at it on an empty stomach may well not be the wisest approach. Few minutes later, you return to your desk, satisfied; now you must begin.

Then you remember the tools you will need to make the outcome of this task even more superb. Perhaps Prezi is what you need and not Powerpoint? Perhaps you would need a different version of the software — the enterprise model that offers endless amendments? Perhaps, you need additional input from a colleague who is on another side of the world? You want the outcome to be outstanding so you vacillate a little and eventually come to the conclusion that you need more resources than you have right there and then.

On a whim, you pick up your phone, perhaps to check the price of the enterprise…
